For smaller, more self-administered ecommerce sites, we recommend OSCommerce, for its wide array of community contributions and long, proven track-record as a PHP application. For small businesses with only a few collaterals to offer (T-shirts, posters, coffee mugs, etc.), Wordpress with a shopping cart plugin is an option worth considering.

For multi-store or multi-language ecommerce sites, we recommend Magneto with the stipulation that it run on dedicated server for optimal performance.
